What is the difference between the annual large plan audit and a DOL audit?

An annual 401(k) large plan audit is an official review of your company's qualified plan by a third-party accounting firm (CPA). Generally, a plan must be audited when it has more than 100 eligible participants on the first day of the plan year (or 120 if the plan hasn't been previously audited).

By contrast, a DOL audit only occurs if your plan is selected by the Department of Labor for audit. Every year, DOL selects plans to audit to ensure compliance with applicable law, regardless of the sponsor or plan size.
