Compound interest

Compound interest is interest that is earned on principal and accumulated interest. Through reinvestment of income and earnings over time, investments can compound, helping to grow the money in your 401(k). Compound interest may be detrimental in some cases, such as when it pertains to debt. In the case of debt, the more compounding that occurs, the greater debt you will owe.
