History

When we started Captain401 back in 2015, our aim was simple: to provide small businesses and startups with affordable, accessible, 401(k)s. Nearly every option for obtaining a company-sponsored retirement plan was either prohibitively expensive, unnecessarily confusing, or just too time consuming to set up and administer (sometimes all three!). As a result, many companies thought that offering a benefit like this to their employees was simply out of reach no matter how much they wanted to.

So, we set out to alleviate those and countless other pain points for the nearly 30 million small businesses across the United States.

Progress and growth

Over the past two years, we’ve talked with thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners to learn about their unique needs, published dozens of articles to educate people on various aspects of finance, written countless lines of code to make syncing and tracking 401(k) contributions seamless, and so much more. Along the way, we’ve helped hundreds of companies and thousands of employees set up new, more personalized and efficient 401(k)s, 403(b)s, profit-sharing, and other plans tailored specifically for them: and we’ve only just begun.

While a retirement savings plan is an incredible start to a secure financial future, it is only one part in a much larger ecosystem of saving. And, though our previous name makes it obvious that we provide 401(k)s, it doesn’t quite capture all that we currently are and all that we aspire to be. Most importantly, it doesn’t accurately reflect what we care about most: you.

Captain401 is now Human Interest!

To better express our values as a company, the ambitions that we have moving forward, and the promise we want to uphold to you, we are thrilled to announce that as of today, Captain401 will now be known as Human Interest!

We know that behind every single organization there are real human beings with real careers, real passions, and real, unique life circumstances. In addition, we want to embody “interest” in every sense of the word. Sure, we want to help you grow your money over time, but we also strive to promote financial literacy so that you are armed with as much knowledge as possible to make the best decision for you. Think of this as your guide to a more secure financial future: on this path of investing and saving, you’re likely to experience many ups and downs (but mostly ups in the long run!). There will be complicated issues as well as easier ones; there will be confusing problems and ones that are more straightforward; there will be simple decisions and ones that are more complex. Throughout it all, we’ll be here to help you navigate what can oftentimes be an uncertain journey with your best interests front and center.

While our name and appearance may have changed, our underlying mission has not: It has always been, and will always be, our belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve long-term financial security. At Human Interest, we are committed to helping you get there.

Sincerely, Roger Lee Co-founder & CEO, Human Interest
